Overcoming Depression: Randi’s NeuroStar Story
What Is NeuroStar TMS?
NeuroStar TMS is a branded form of transcranial magnetic stimulation. TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate targeted areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. During treatment, a treatment coil is placed against the head while magnetic pulses are delivered to a specific brain region. Patients may hear clicking sounds and feel tapping, tingling, or warmth near the treatment area. NeuroStar TMS is not electroconvulsive therapy, also known as ECT. TMS does not require anesthesia, does not involve a seizure being intentionally triggered, and does not require recovery from sedation after each session.
What to Expect With NeuroStar TMS Therapy in Boca Raton
NeuroStar TMS begins with a clinical review, not a walk-in treatment session. The provider first looks at diagnosis, treatment history, safety factors, and whether TMS may be an appropriate next step.
Who May Be a Candidate?
NeuroStar TMS may be considered for adults with depression who have not had enough improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatment.
NeuroStar TMS is not right for everyone. A doctor must decide whether treatment is appropriate based on the patient’s condition, history, and safety profile.
What the Provider May Review
What Happens Before Treatment?
Before NeuroStar TMS begins, the patient meets with the provider for a clinical review. This visit helps determine whether TMS is a reasonable next step and whether any safety concerns need to be addressed first.
What Happens During a NeuroStar TMS Session?
NeuroStar TMS sessions take place in the office. The exact treatment time and schedule can vary by protocol, provider recommendation, insurance requirements, and patient response.
The patient sits in a treatment chair while the provider prepares the session.
A small treatment coil is positioned against the head to deliver focused magnetic pulses.
The patient stays awake during treatment and may hear clicking sounds or feel tapping sensations.
Many patients can return to usual activities after the session. The schedule is reviewed before treatment begins.
What Happens After Treatment?
After a NeuroStar TMS session, many patients can return to normal daily activities. The provider monitors symptoms, side effects, treatment response, and progress during the treatment course.
Follow-up matters because depression care is not only about completing sessions. The treatment plan may also include medication management, therapy support, lifestyle considerations, and ongoing psychiatric care when appropriate.
Patients should tell the provider about side effects, mood changes, worsening symptoms, or any safety concerns during treatment.
