SPRAVATO® is contraindicated in patients with:


Sedation: In clinical trials, 48% to 61% of SPRAVATO®-treated patients developed sedation and 0.3% to 0.4% of SPRAVATO®-treated patients experienced loss of consciousness.

Because of the possibility of delayed or prolonged sedation, patients must be monitored by a healthcare provider for at least 2 hours at each treatment session, followed by an assessment to determine when the patient is considered clinically stable and ready to leave the healthcare setting.

Can you take esketamine nasal spray while staying on medication?

Yes. To receive nasal esketamine spray, you must be on an antidepressant medication.

Am I a candidate for esketamine nasal spray?

Esketamine nasal spray is FDA approved for two indications:

  • Treatment-resistant depression (patients who have tried previous oral antidepressants with unsatisfactory results)
  • Depressive symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder with suicidal thoughts or actions

You should not take esketamine nasal spray if you have:

  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • History of strokes or brain bleeds
  • Abnormal blood vessels at risk of bleeding, such as aneurysms or arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
  • Sensitivity to esketamine

How long is a round of esketamine nasal spray treatment?

A typical round of esketamine nasal spray treatment consists of 24-26 sessions in four phases:

  • Phase 1: 2 treatments a week for 4 weeks
  • Phase 2: 1 treatment a week for 4 weeks
  • Phase 3: 1 treatment every 1-2 weeks
  • Phase 4: Maintenance program consisting of 12-14 additional treatments

Before each appointment, avoid eating for two hours and limit fluid intake for 30 minutes. Each session takes place in a secure & comfortable space at Lotus Psychiatry & Wellness clinic. You'll self-administer the nasal spray, and your blood pressure will be checked at intervals.

You must stay at the center for at least two hours and arrange for transportation home.

Does esketamine nasal spray help treat anxiety?

No. Esketamine nasal spray is FDA approved for treatment-resistant depression and major depressive disorder with acute harmful behaviors.

Is esketamine nasal spray covered by insurance?

Yes! It's covered by many major insurance companies. The care staff at Lotus will handle all insurance matters. On average, insurance covers about 28 treatment sessions.
