NeuroStar TMS for Adolescents With Depression
Discover a New Solution for Adolescent Depression
NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is FDA-cleared as an adjunct treatment for Major Depressive Disorder in adolescents ages 15–21. Because NeuroStar TMS is available by prescription, treatment should begin with a clinical evaluation to review diagnosis, current care, medical history, safety factors, and whether TMS may be appropriate.
Clinical Success
In a clinical study involving 1,169 adolescent patients, NeuroStar TMS demonstrated remarkable results:
- 78% experienced improvement in their depression symptoms
- 48% achieved symptom relief (remission)
How It Works
NeuroStar TMS uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate targeted brain regions involved in mood regulation. Treatment is noninvasive, and the patient remains awake during the session.
Why Choose NeuroStar TMS?
Since 2008, NeuroStar has been the #1 physician-recommended TMS treatment for adults. With over 6.4 million treatments performed on more than 175,000 patients, its safety and effectiveness are well-established. Now, this revolutionary therapy is available for adolescents, providing a non-drug, non-invasive treatment option.
Treatment Experience
Each NeuroStar TMS session lasts about 19 minutes, allowing adolescents to resume their normal activities immediately, such as going back to school or participating in sports. This makes it an ideal addition to existing treatment regimens for busy adolescents.

What to Expect During NeuroStar TMS Treatment
Here’s what you can expect from a NeuroStar Advanced Therapy (TMS) session:
Before Treatment
You’ll recline comfortably in the treatment chair. A small, curved magnetic coil will be positioned lightly on your head.
During Treatment
NeuroStar delivers focused magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of the brain. You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head.
After Treatment
NeuroStar Advanced Therapy: Depending on your doctor’s recommendation, each treatment takes between 19 and 37 minutes.
FAQs About NeuroStar TMS for Adolescents
What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, helping to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is typically used when antidepressant medications have not been effective, have stopped working, or are being considered as an alternative to medication.
How does TMS work?
TMS involves delivering magnetic pulses to specific parts of the brain.
Does TMS Hurt?
While you may experience some minor discomfort at the treatment site (where the device touches your head), it typically subsides within the first week of treatment. There is no need for sedation, and the procedure does not affect your alertness. During your session, you can read, watch TV, or chat with your treatment coordinator, and you can drive yourself home immediately after the treatment.
How long is TMS treatment?
A typical initial course of treatment is about 19-37 minutes daily over 7 weeks.
Is TMS Therapy covered by my insurance?
Insurance coverage for NeuroStar TMS varies by plan, age, diagnosis, medical-necessity criteria, prior treatment history, and authorization requirements. Patients or parents should verify benefits before treatment planning begins.
Is TMS Therapy a good alternative for patients who cannot tolerate the side effects of antidepressant medications?
TMS does not circulate through the bloodstream, so it avoids side effects commonly associated with medications, such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, nausea, dry mouth, or sedation. The most frequently reported side effects during clinical trials were headaches and scalp discomfort, which were generally mild to moderate and tended to decrease after the first week of treatment.
Is TMS Therapy like other alternative therapies that use magnets to treat some illnesses?
No, TMS Therapy uses a unique method of pulsed magnetic fields to achieve therapeutic benefits. The intensity of the magnetic field is comparable to that of an MRI. This approach is fundamentally different from the use of low-intensity, static magnetic fields found in popular products, which deliver weak and undirected static fields incapable of activating brain cells. The activation and stimulation of brain cells are key factors in the effectiveness of TMS therapy.
Adult Indications for Use
The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is indicated for treating depressive episodes and decreasing anxiety symptoms in adult patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) who have failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatments in the current episode. Additionally, it is intended to be used as an adjunct for the treatment of adult patients suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Adolescent Indications for Use
NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is indicated as an adjunct for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adolescent patients aged 15-21. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is only available by prescription. A doctor can help decide if NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is right for you. Patients’ results may vary.
Important Safety Information
The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient, occurring during the TMS treatment course, and do not persist for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).
NeuroStar Advanced Therapy should not be used with patients who have non-removable conductive metal in or near the head. Additionally, NeuroStar Advanced Therapy has not been studied in patients who have not received prior antidepressant treatment.
